Animal Rights Activists to Safeguard Draft Regulation on Dog Meat Ban

16 March 2023 12:44 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Animal rights activist and founder of Animal Defenders Indonesia, Doni Herdaru, on Wednesday, said the community will conduct intense talks with Jakarta officials in the formulation of the regional regulation draft (Raperda) banning dog meat consumption.

Feedback would be given to the Department of Food Security, Maritime Affairs, and Agriculture (KPKP) and the Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD).

“We intend to provide feedback for the dog meat consumption ban regulatory draft that has become an urgent matter,” said Doni on March 15, Antaranews reported.

A number of city officials met with Doni and Christian Joshua Pale, founder of Animals Hope Shelter. The officials include KPKP department head Suharini Eliawati and DPRD member from the PDIP faction Hardiyanto Kenneth.

Doni discussed the program being worked on by the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) that is related to animal welfare.

"We also know that there is a timeline that is being carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, taking care of animal welfare. Later its derivatives will be used as a study for the Raperda, as well as becoming a Regional Regulation in DKI Jakarta," said Doni.

Legislator Hardiyanto Kenneth said discussions between animal rights activists and the KPKP are in progress through the Ministry of Agriculture. He pledged for the draft to be discussed as a future Regional Regulation or Perda.

"It's still in process because the discussion had to come from the regulations of the Ministry of Agriculture first. Later on, they (the KPKP Agency) will form  Animal Welfare regulations," said Hardiyanto.
