TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Monday issued a hydrometeorology weather warning for regions in Kalimantan and Sulawesi, specifically Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and West Sulawesi.
The BMKG estimates that rain accompanied by lightning will occur in Gorontalo, Banjarmasin, Manado, and Pangkal Pinang. Heavy rains are likely to also occur in Samarinda, Mamuju, and Medan.
The agency’s observation detected a cyclonic circulation in the northern Pacific Ocean, North Maluku, which forms an elongated convergence area in the Philippine Sea. Convergence, as is known, can increase the growth potential of rain clouds.
Other convergence areas were also observed extending from the Karimata Strait to North Sumatra, in the Malacca Strait, on the west coast of Bengkulu, in the northern Java Sea, West Java, and East Java.
This weather phenomenon was also detected from the south coast of West Kalimantan to Central Kalimantan, from East Kalimantan to the Maluku Sea, and from Gorontalo to the Seram Sea, on the north coast of Papua and from the south coast of West Papua to Papua.
The BMKG also issued an early warning of waves as high as 2.5 - 4.0 meters in the North Natuna Sea and the northern waters of the Anambas Islands - Natuna Islands that could take place between March 13-14..
