TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) hoped that the standardization of electric vehicle batteries can be achieved by this year. IBC President Director Toto Nugroho said that the standardization of batteries is important to allow IBC to distribute batteries to every stakeholder in the electric vehicle ecosystem, especially the electric vehicle industry.
"This is very important for the consumer. Because if the standardization is not proper, it will burden consumers," Toto said on Friday, March 10, 2023.
Furthermore, Toto also hoped that a battery management system can be implemented to allow integration between data and transactions through an application. "This is what we are preparing in terms of technology," Toto said.
In relation to domestic production of batteries, Toto said that IBC will need Rp217 trillion of investment. Currently, IBC is working together with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited (CATL) dan LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES) in developing end-to-end battery projects.
"Investment value from the two projects matches their commitment stated in the framework agreement signed back on March last year at around Rp200 trillion,: Toto said in a meeting with Commission VI of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, February 15, 2023.
Despite requiring a long time and massive investment, Toto said Indonesia will also get bigger added value. "Because the value of a battery can be 11 times higher compared to nickel, and if we have reached precursor batteries and cell batteries, the value is 40 times higher," Toto said.
The government had targeted to achieve battery standardization for electric vehicles pursuant to the government's decision to apply the electric vehicle incentive policy on Monday, March 6, 2023.
