TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A terrorism convict incarcerated at the Nusakambangan penitentiary, Baharudin Ahmad or Amir Bima, claimed that 70 percent of fellow prisoners who share the same status as him are willing to participate in the deradicalization program titled "the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia" (NKRI) program.
Amir Bima is one of the many figures originating from West Nusa Tenggara who become involved in terrorism back in 2010 and mostly recruited new members in two regions; Bima and Poso in Central Sulawesi. Amir was also criminally incriminated in terrorism funding to the Mujahidin Indonesia Timur (MIT) Poso and had been jailed twice for acts of terrorism.
Despite his long-time involvement in terrorism, Amir is said to have changed. He has even become a member of the dakwah safari team tasked to help deradicalize other inmates in Nusakambangan.
"Meeting with people who are still stubborn as we visit high-risk penitentiary, and discuss with them," said Amir in a written statement to Tempo on Thursday, March 9, 2023.
Amir also claimed that 90 percent of inmates in the NKRI program are those who no longer see others as infidels.
"As many as 70 percent of them wish to take part in the (NKRI) program. It's just that here it is quite difficult to get additional literacy to refute their understanding," said Amir Bima.
Amir insisted that the facility needs to add more books as it is one of the main obstacles in helping other inmates.
