Mosque Council Bans Mosques from Giving Political Stage ahead of Elections

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) has barred all administrators of houses of prayers from giving a stage to political figures ahead of the 2024 general elections. This decision is agreed upon during the council’s national meeting on Monday, March 6.

“Mosque administrators are prohibited from giving a political platform to political figures in the 2024 elections,” said DMI Deputy Chairperson Comr. Gen. Syafruddin in his statement, Monday.

In the meeting taking place at the DMI HQ on Jalan Matraman Raya, Jakarta, Syafruddin said there was a recommendation to hold the council’s congress in stages according to its articles of association and bylaws (AD/ART).

“The DMI chairman Jusuf Kalla has given the mandate to hold a congress in stages according to AD/ART,” said Syafruddin, who is the former deputy chief of the National Police.

DMI also mandated the Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Budi Gunawan to serve as the chairman of the DMI’s Expert Council. Syafruddin claimed to have confirmed the mandate to Budi.
