TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo confirmed his support for the General Election Commission (KPU) to file an appeal against the Central Jakarta District Court's ruling to postpone the 2024 general elections.
Previously, the Central Jakarta District Court ruled in favor of the newly established Prima Party which did not pass the KPU's verification process to take part in the election.
"We hoped that the election stages will continue, and indeed it is a controversy that raises pros and cons, but the government also supports the KPU to file an appeal," Jokowi said in Bandung, West Java on Monday, March 6, 2023.
Jokowi said that the government is committed to supporting the elections according to the schedule. According to Jokowi, the government has even prepared funds for the implementation of the five-year political event.
"I have conveyed this many times that the government is committed [to support] the holding of the elections well. The budget for the election preparation has also been prepared," said Jokowi.
On March 2, 2023, the Central Jakarta District Court ordered the KPU to postpone the stages of the 2024 general elections and pay material compensation of Rp500 million.
The panel of judges led by T. Oyong stated that the KPU had committed an unlawful act, namely by declaring that Prima Party failed to meet the requirements in the verification stage to be able to participate in the election.
