BPS: Foreign Tourist Arrivals Increase by Over 500% YoY

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the number of foreign tourists visiting the country in January 2023 reached 735,950, an increase of 503.34 percent compared to January 2022 or year-on-year which only amounted to 121,980.

However, the arrival of foreign tourists in January 2023 actually decreased by 17.78 percent from the previous month, December 2022, which reached 895,120.

“735,950 foreign tourists visited Indonesia in January 2023, dropped by 17.78 percent compared to December 2022. Meanwhile, on an annual basis, the number grew 503.34 percent,” said BPS Deputy for Distribution and Service Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, in a presentation monitored online in Jakarta, Wednesday, March 1.

In January 2023, she outlined, 620,900 foreign tourists entered the country through the main gate and the remaining 115,000 entered through the border gate. The two figures dropped by respectively 19.07 percent and 10.09 percent, compared to those in December 2022.

Pudji explained that international tourists visiting Indonesia in January 2023 were dominated by Malaysians who accounted for 15.26 percent, followed by Australian tourists (13.46 percent), Singaporean tourists (13.05 percent), Timor Leste tourists (9.57 percent), and Indian tourists (4.46 percent).
