TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi conveyed the country’s candidature as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the  2024-2026 period during the 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, February 27, 2023.

Indonesia proposed a theme of inclusive partnership for humanity, aiming to reaffirm the country’s commitment to human rights law enforcement.

At the session which coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Retno requested support from all countries for Indonesia’s candidature and called for a strengthened commitment to implementing human rights.

“The 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights must be a momentum to strengthen the commitment to upholding human rights, and must not allow attention to the world's human rights conditions to be divided,” she said, as quoted from Antara.

Retno Marsudi went on to say that although the Declaration continued to inspire transformation towards a more just, equal, and inclusive world, close cooperation is needed to realize it. Thus, Indonesia hoped to win support from other countries in achieving this goal.

The UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva kick-started on Monday, February 27, and will last until April 4. More than 100 heads of state to ministerial representatives take part in the annual meeting.
