TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Monday detected a magnitude 5.0 tectonic earthquake striking the Banda Sea in Maluku. The epicenter took place 205 kilometers Northwest of the region and came from a depth of 154 kilometers.
"Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a medium-sized earthquake due to deformation in the subducted plate or intraslab in the Banda Sea," said the agency’s head of earthquake and tsunami chief Daryono.
Based on the estimated shock map, this earthquake was felt until the Amahai, Babar Islands, and Dawelor Dawera areas and measured at II-III on the MMI scale, which mimics the shaking felt as if a truck was passing.
To date, there have been no damages reported caused by the earthquake. The agency also said no tsunami warnings were triggered and there were yet any aftershocks detected.
