Heru Budi Urges Jakartans to Use Transjakarta as City's Traffic Index Jumps to 29

23 February 2023 08:23 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaActing Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono encouraged residents to use Transjakarta buses in a bid to ease traffic jams in the capital whose congestion ranking increased to 29th out of 389 cities in 56 countries in 2022 from previously 46th in 2021.

“Let's take Transjakarta together,” said Heru Budi at the Jakarta City Hall, on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

He pledged to solve the traffic jam in the city. “We’ll clear the traffic issues,” he said.

According to the world traffic rating agency TomTom International BV, the average travel time for a 10-kilometer trip in Jakarta reaches 22 minutes and 40 seconds.

TomTom reported that in general, the traffic in major cities has returned to being heavy. Quiet roads due to mobility restrictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic are now back to busy.

The agency measured the traffic congestion index in 389 cities in 56 countries in 2022, including Jakarta. Based on TomTom's congestion index, two cities in Southeast Asia are included in the top 50; Jakarta and Manila that is ranked ninth with an average travel time per 10 kilometers reaching 27 minutes.

Meanwhile, the city with the highest congestion index is London of England with a 36-minutes- and 20-second travel time per 10 kilometers, while the city at the lowest rank is Almere of the Netherlands with an eight-minute and 20-second travel time per 10 kilometers.
