TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta's traffic congestion ranking has increased to 29th in 2022 after briefly dropping to 46th in 2021 according to the congestion index issued by the world city traffic rating agency, TomTom International BV.
According to the agency’s website on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, the capital city’s average travel time per 10 kilometers is recorded at 22 minutes and 40 seconds.
The general consensus is that urban congestion spiked after the coronavirus pandemic has seemingly died down along with more relaxed public mobility restrictions, which is also evident in other major cities in the world.
Based on the traffic index of 389 cities across 56 countries in 2022, there were two Southeast Asian cities sitting on the top 50 rank, namely Jakarta and Manila.
The city with the highest congestion index is London in England after the city recorded a travel time of 36 minutes and 20 seconds per 10 kilometers. On the other hand, the city sitting on the lowest rank is the city of Almere in the Netherlands, with a travel time of only eight minutes and 20 seconds per 10 kilometers.
According to TomTom, the long travel time for cities in the world is due to a number of factors, ranging from the condition of road infrastructure such as road categories, and road capacity to speed limits.
