TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's digital banking transaction value rose 27.96 percent (yoy) to Rp4,900.6 trillion or around US$324.18 billion as of January 2023. Meanwhile, electronic money transactions grew 26.08 percent to 36.57 trillion, year on year.
Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo said that the value of digital economic and financial transactions is growing rapidly in driving economic activity. The growth is supported by the increasingly digital economy and convenience of digital payment systems, and the rapid rise of digital banking.
"The value of payment transactions using ATM cards, debit cards, and credit cards rose 5.42 percent to Rp689.09 trillion, year on year," Perry said in a press conference at the central bank's headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday, February 15.
Perry said the central bank will continue to maintain stability and increase the efficiency of cross-border payment transactions by reinforcing policies and accelerating the digitization payment system, in order to maintain the recovery momentum of Indonesia's economy.
Strong gain against the greenback
Perry said that the rupiah's gain against the United States (US) dollar continues to strengthen, supporting the stability of the economy. "The rupiah exchange rate on February 15, 2023, gained 2.39 percent from its December 2022 level," he said.
Perry remarked how the rupiah gains better on the greenback compared to neighboring nations and fellow emerging economies such as the Philippines (0.99 percent), Thailand (0.85 percent), and Malaysia (0.27 percent). This, he said, is in part due to the foreign capital inflow into the domestic financial market, driven by investors' positive perceptions of Indonesia's well-maintained prospects and stability.
"[Other factors include] the returns on domestic financial assets that remain attractive, as well as subsiding uncertainties in the global financial market," Perry said.
