5.2 M Earthquake in Jayapura, Papua, Caused by Active Fault: BMKG

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Thursday announced its analysis of the destructive earthquake that hit Jayapura in Papua today at 13:28 Indonesia Western Time (WIB).
Based on an updated parameter, the earthquake was determined to be 5.2-magnitude on the Richter scale, according to BMKG head of earthquake and tsunami Daryono.
The quake’s epicenter was detected from the coordinates of 2.50° south latitude and 140.70° east longitude on land and came from a depth of 10 kilometers. It was classified as a shallow quake.
"Based on the epicenter and the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow one due to active fault activity," said Daryono.
From January 2 to Thursday, February 9, at 14:00 WIB there were 1,072 earthquakes in the vicinity of Jayapura City, 128 incidents of which could be felt by people.
