TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bambang Soesatyo, chairman of the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI), said that the government's plan to incentivize electric vehicles, or EV, could boost sales. The government's plan is to subsidize the purchase of electric cars and motorbikes.

"Sales will definitely go up because the price would be more affordable to people. Take Wuling for example, it is now being sold at around Rp200 million. [With subsidies the price] would be Rp150 million, it can encourage people to buy," Bambang, who is also the speaker of the MPR, said in Jakarta, Thursday, 2 February.

The incentives, he said, can also expedite Indonesia's pace in reaching its target of zero carbon emissions as it will encourage people to migrate from vehicles running on conventional fuel.

The government held a meeting to discuss electric vehicle incentives on Monday, January 30, inviting several advisers as well as a number of ministers.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita revealed that incentives to purchase electric vehicles will be implemented starting in 2023, namely Rp80 million for the purchase of electric cars, Rp8 million for electric motorbikes, Rp40 million for hybrid cars, and Rp5 million for electric convertible motorcycles.
