TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in a statement on Friday announced a magnitude 5.1 earthquake had struck 20 kilometers Northwest of Morotai Island in North Maluku. The agency reported that the quake came from a depth of 40 kilometers.
“The northwest coast of Morotai Island, North Maluku, has been struck by a tectonic earthquake,” said BMKG head of earthquake and tsunami Daryono.
The agency revealed that it originated from subduction activities from the Philippines Sea fault. Fortunately, the rather strong earthquake did not trigger tsunami warnings.
