Corruption Perception Index Falls; Jokowi Pledges Full Evaluation

2 February 2023 12:28 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in a statement on Thursday pledged to evaluate Indonesia’s corruption eradication system after the country’s corruption perception index in 2022 dropped four points from 38 to 34, based on the study by Transparency International Indonesia.

“Yes. That will be our collective evaluation that will be corrected,” the President wrote on February 2.

The decline in the Corruption Perceptions Index or CPI in 2022 ranks Indonesia in 110th out of 180 countries in the world. Even though in 2021, Indonesia managed to rank itself at 96th position out of 180 countries.

KPK Laments Corruption Prevention Difficulties

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said it often encounters a myriad of obstacles upon preventing corruption. KPK Deputy for Prevention and Monitoring Pahala Nainggolan said cases occurred frequently due to the lack of commitment from state administrators to take corruption prevention seriously.

"I think this is the result of us sitting on our laurels with the current condition without introducing any breakthroughs," he said at the Pullman Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday, January 31.

Pahala said preventing and eradicating corruption in Indonesia is improving the system which involves many ministries and institutions. He gave an example with efforts to prevent corruption in ports that seek fast and cheap services.

Another example, Pahala said, is the problem of licensing land management through the online submission system (OSS). According to him, the system should in theory make it easier to apply for permits, but its implementation actually shows the opposite.

Pahala claims the KPK had written a letter to President Jokowi recommending strengthening the oversight of the Government Internal Supervisory Apparatus (APIP). He said that since the recommendation letter was sent in 2017, there has been no follow-up from the government.
