TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir on Wednesday vocalized his determination on fixing Indonesia’s football through the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI). He claims that he will adopt his ‘total cleanup’ strategy in the football association as he did to the SOEs Ministry if elected.
“It’s an attempt to fix Indonesia’s football which has been left dirty for too long. It resembles my perception when I entered the SOEs Ministry. I enjoy putting people to jail,” said the Minister in Central Jakarta on February 1.
He recalled his urge to eradicate corrupt tendencies that existed in the SOEs Ministry. Objectively, under his leadership, high-profile cases of corruption that were uncovered under his leadership include the Asabri and Jiwasraya insurance frauds. The case within Garuda Indonesia was also investigated thoroughly.
Erick Thohir believes PSSI needs similar treatment as the aforementioned institutions. “[Football] has the same issue,” Thohir said. PSSI members along with football club chairpeople will elect the future chairperson.
