DPR Urges Govt to Dismiss BRIN Head Laksana Tri Handoko

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VII urged the government to immediately dismiss the Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Laksana Tri Handoko given the never-ending problems within the agency. This request was noted in the minutes of meeting of Commission VII and BRIN Head on Monday, January 30, 2023.

The agenda of the meeting was initially about the reallocation of BRIN’s budget in 2023 related to work programs in the community. However, before Handoko made a presentation, a number of House members interrupted him and highlighted BRIN's performance.

“Before there is an explanation from BRIN, I must first convey in response to the current situation of our research body, namely BRIN,” said Deputy Chair of the Research Commission Maman Abdurrahman.

He explained that the agency’s budget for community programs last year amounted to around Rp800 billion. But, the realization only reached Rp100 billion. “The simplest question is, where did the rest of Rp700 billion go?” he asked.

According to him, BRIN had many internal problems, from polemic relations between fellow researchers to unprofessional actions committed by officials. Therefore, he asked Laksana to take full responsibility as Head of BRIN.

“I firmly recommend changing the Head of BRIN. Because it's been almost two years that BRIN has had these problems,” said Maman.
