Bali Govt Aiming for Electric Vehicle Growth Until 2026

27 January 2023 18:54 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bali provincial government is aiming to boost the population of electric motorcycles up to 140,000 units by 2026. The target was decided in a meeting following the inauguration of the Regional Action Plan for the Acceleration of Battery-Based Electric Motorized Vehicles (KLBB)

As reported by Antaranews, the head of Bali's transportation agency IGW Samsi Gunarta elaborated that the regional plan will be an important action to assist the transition from traditional internal combustion-engined vehicles to electrification.

"There is a goal to reduce carbon emissions by 41,000 tons in the year 2026. [We are aiming] to see the use of 140,000 electric motorcycles and 5,719 electric cars, and 50 buses," said the transportation agency head on Friday, January 27, 2023, Antaranews reported.

Samsi said that the target was formulated from the national target for emissions calculation and in order to achieve this target, the provincial government will enact five main strategies, namely management, infrastructure, industry, human resources, and communication marketing.

"In addition to requiring strong policies, the funding strategy must encourage collaboration between the government and the private sector, including government business entities, where around 60 percent of the budget needs will be implemented between the public and business entities," Samsi elaborated.

Bali currently has had 1,766 electric motorcycle users since 2019 and is reportedly constantly growing in 2021. Samsi claims there are 60 charging stations spread across the island to date.
