TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shin Tae-Yong would remain in his position as the coach of the Indonesian national football team until his contract expires in December 2023, the Football Association of Indonesia or PSSI confirmed.
"Of course, we would (keep Shin Tae-Yong)," said the PSSI Secretary General, Yunus Nusi in Jakarta, Tuesday, January 24, 2023.
Shin Tae-Yong's next assignment would focus on preparing the U-20 national team to compete in the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup. The game will be held in Uzbekistan on March 1-18. "Shin will immediately lead the preparations for the U-20 Asian Cup," said Yunus Nusi.
Currently, Shin Tae-Yong is residing in his hometown in South Korea and is expected to return to Indonesia to manage the Garuda squad in early February.
Discussions about Shin Tae-Yong's future have re-emerged, with the current contract period expected to expire in December. The former South Korean national team coach at the 2018 World Cup has been signing a contract with PSSI since December 2019.
Shin Tae-Yong has succeeded in leading the previous Indonesian national team to qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup and the U-20 team for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup. The South Korean coach has also been able to improve the FIFA ranking of the Indonesian team from 179 to 151.
Shin Tae-yong's performance came under the spotlight after the Indonesian national team failed in the 2022 AFF Cup. The Garuda squad, which is expected to win the championship after serving as a runner-up in the previous years, was eliminated in the semifinals.
