Metro Police: State Incurs Rp70tn Losses from Jakarta Traffic Congestion

25 January 2023 13:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe traffic congestion in Jakarta has returned to normal to pre-COVID-19 pandemic baseline, Traffic Director of Metro Jaya Police Sr. Comr. Latif Usman reported. The data was obtained from the capital’s traffic congestion index.

Consequently, the state might incur losses of more than Rp70 trillion. Road users were also predicted to lose 30 minutes during commutes.

“In 2019, Jakarta’s traffic congestion index reached 53 percent. The level of 50 percent is very worrying, let alone 40 percent. This means [Jakarta is] already at an uncomfortable level [to live by],” said Latif on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

In 2020, the city’s congestion level was 36 percent, which dropped from the previous year’s level due to public mobility restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the figure continued to decline to 34 percent.

In the first quarter of 2022, the congestion level in Jakarta surged to 48 percent. Latif, however, stopped short of providing the data for the following quarters, claiming to have not received them.

“In 2017, we (Jakarta) were ranked the fourth most congested city in the world. In 2021, we were ranked 46th because of the pandemic. And in 2022, I predict that [the congestion level] is already above 50 percent,” Latif explained.

The Traffic Directorate of Metro Jaya Police recorded that throughout 2022, there were 22 million vehicle movements with an assumed population number of 10.7 million people.
