KPK Arrests Former GAM Commander and Corruption Fugitive in Aceh

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, arrested corruption fugitive, Izil Azhar, on Tuesday, January 24. Izil is a former Commander of the GAM (Free Aceh Movement) of Sabang City who has been on the run for more than four years.

Head of KPK Reporting Section Ali Fikri said the search for Izil began on November 30, 2018. "He was found and secured around Banda Aceh," Ali said in a written statement received by Tempo, Tuesday.

Ali Fikri said that Izil's arrest was carried out in collaboration with a team from the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Regional Police through coordination that began in December 2022.

Earlier today, Izil Azhar was transferred to Jakarta. Ali Fikri said that Azhar would be questioned further by the KPK regarding the corruption case he is implicated in.

Izil Azhar was named as a suspect in a corruption case along with Irwandi Yusuf, former Governor of Aceh (2007-2012), who is accused of accepting bribes and kickbacks during his term as governor.
