Jokowi Orders Immediate Construction of Giant Sea Wall

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in a field observation in East Jakarta ordered acting governor Heru Budi Hartono to immediately initiate the giant sea wall project in the northern coastal region of Jakarta. He insisted that it is needed to battle the frequent tidal floods in the north of Jakarta’s neighborhoods. 

“I have ordered the Jakarta governor,” said Jokowi as he observed the Ciliwung canal known as the Ciliwung Sodetan on January 24.

Heru Budi, on December 27 last year, announced that the city is currently attempting to better handle the issue of flooding in the capital city. Apart from controlling the flow of water from the neighboring city Bogor, the city is also trying to overcome tidal floods by constructing a giant sea wall. 

“The embankment is 22.5 km in length and 11 km of them are under the authority of the city administration, which only completed 0.5 km but will be increased to 1.59 km in 2022,” said Heru Budi on December 27.

The Jakarta administration is aiming to complete the Giant Sea Wall in 2027. 

In his visit to Ciliwung today, Heru Budi Hartono mentioned the issue of funding the giant sea wall considering that the status of the capital city will be relocated to East Kalimantan. He said sources of funding will be sourced from various sources that will coincide with the central government.
