TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) updated data on the earthquake that rocked Malang, East Java, on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 11:36:12 western Indonesian time (WIB).
The southern region of East Java was rocked by a tectonic quake with an updated magnitude of 4.8 based on the analysis results, said the head of the agency’s quake and tsunami center Daryono in a statement today.
The epicenter was located at 9.14° south latitude and 112.48° east longitude, or precisely at sea, 111 kilometers southwest of Malang, at a depth of 65 kilometers.
“Taking into account the epicenter and the depth, its intraslab intermediate quake triggered by deformation of rocks in the Indo-Australian Ocean Plate,” he explained, adding that the agency’s analysis also concluded that it had a thrust fault mechanism.
The shaking was reported in the Karangkates area, Sumbermanjing Wetan, with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI. In the Kepanjen area, Lumajang, Malang, it was felt weaker at an intensity scale II-III MMI.
People in Badung, Blitar, Trenggalek, Pacitan, and Bondowoso also experienced weak tremors as the quake’s intensity was recorded at MMI level II.
Fortunately, the earthquake had no potential to cause a tsunami. The BMKG has not yet detected aftershocks as of 12:00 WIB. Daryono thus called on the public to stay calm.
