M 6.2 Earthquake Strikes Aceh and North Sumatra

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on the early morning of January 16 reported a moderately strong earthquake measured at magnitude 6.2 on the Richter scale hitting Aceh and North Sumatra.
The epicenter of the quake at 05:30 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) was detected Southeast off the coast of Aceh Singkil Regency and from a depth (hypocenter) of 23 kilometers.
Gunung Sitoli, Nias, in North Sumatra felt most of the effects at IV on the MMI scale, while other areas such as Subulussalam, Aceh Singkil, and South Aceh felt the earthquake at III-IV on the MMI scale. Other regions such as Sidempuan in North Sumatra felt the least effects of the earthquake.
