TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Car sales in Indonesia have increased as the economic condition improved after the Covid-19 outbreak subsided.

Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), total car shipments from factories to dealers (wholesales) last year reached 1,048,040 units. The number increased by 18.1 percent compared to the same period in the previous year of 2021, which was 887,202 units.

In the retail sector (delivery from dealers to consumers), a total of 1,013,582 units were sold, a number 17.4 percent higher compared to the previous year of 863,348 units.

However, the achievement of wholesale and retail in 2022 still falls behind the 2019 period that reached 1,030,126 and 1,042,994 units, respectively.

The head of Gaikindo, Jongkie Sugiarto, hoped that the car sales in 2023 could perform well like last year's. "Vehicle sales in 2023 are expected to be the same as in 2022 because the economic growth this year could be similar. We hope that Indonesia's economic growth can continue to remain at 5 percent or more," Jongkie told Tempo on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Meanwhile, car production in Indonesia in 2022 reached 1,470,146 units. The number grew significantly by 31 percent from 2021 with only 1,121,967 units.

Car exports also experienced growth in the form of Completely Built Up (CBU) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units. For CBU, total exports reached 473,602 units, 60.7 percent higher compared to 2021's 294,639 units. CKD exports recorded 596,541 units, growing 5 percent compared to 2021 of 91,964 units.

Car imports that entered Indonesia in 2022 were recorded at 83,298 units. When compared to 2021, this number grew 74.3 percent from 47,779 units.
