TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Papua Police Chief Insp. General Mathius Fakhiri on Wednesday said the National Police Main Headquarters (Mabes Polri) have placed 1,000 personnel on guard from the mobile brigade (Brimob) to be mobilized to Papua. He elaborated that this unit will quickly respond to unwanted security situations.
Police have beefed up the security measures in Papua, which the institution claim is to respond to rising security disruptions in a number of subregions. Police are focusing on the districts of Puncak Regency, Dogiyai, Intan Jaya, Yahukimo, Pegubin, Nduga, Mimika, Jayawijaya, and Jayapura City.
“The national police chief declared that 1,000 Brimob Nusantara personnel are ready to be mobilized to Papua anytime needed,” said Mathius at Jayapura on January 11.
Police Chief: Persuasive Approach
Apart from deploying troops, police expect the local government will actively approach these groups. "Approach and embrace them by providing positive activities so they don't commit crimes," said Mathius.
According to reports, he said that those who join local armed groups are young men who often commit criminal acts which were then used by the group.
