TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian women's singles badminton athlete Gregoria Mariska Tunjung managed to achieve victory when playing against He Bing Jiao from China, in the first round of the 2023 Malaysia Open. Playing at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, Gregoria won with a score of 21-11 and 21-17.

This win was also the first for Gregoria against He Bing Jiao after the two have competed four times, with He Bing Jiao having won against Gregoria three times. "I'm certainly happy with today's win over He Bing Jiao. This is the first victory after we had competed for the fourth time. Even so, I shouldn't be too complacent because there are still more upcoming matches," said Gregoria in a PBSI release.

The 23-year-old athlete admitted that when choosing a court, He Bing Jiao was actually in a winning position. However, she also saw that her opponents were being doubtful and unsure about implementing strategies.

"The key to victory this time was that my opponent in the first match was unable to control the game sufficiently. Meanwhile, I was able to play well and made the most of the opportunities. The opponent also had a little pressure, so her game was not developing enough," Gregoria added.

Malaysia Open is the first tournament in the year 2023. Gregoria admitted that she doesn't have a specific target and just wants to enjoy the game and presented her best performance. "I hope this year, I can win a title. Other than that, I want to climb the world ranking, hopefully, at the end of the year I can become a part of the top 10," Gregoria said.

Women's doubles consisting of Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi also received a win against athletes from French, Margot Lambert / Anne Tran with a score of 21-16 and 21-15. "I'm happy to win in the opening match, but we have to be better in the next match. We have to play better and be more prepared. Our game has to be more varied and we have to be able to control the direction of the wind," said Febriana.

"Tomorrow we will face Chen Qing Chen / Jia Yi Fan from China. We will play without burden and show no fear. We have to be brave against them," Febriana said regarding the second round of the Malaysia Open 2023.
