M 5.4 Earthquake Hits East Java Region of Pacitan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a magnitude 5.4 earthquake hitting the region of Pacitan in East Java on Monday evening at 7:23 PM Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
The epicenter was detected 70 kilometers south of Pacitan City and came from a depth of 59 kilometers at the South Java megathrust zone.
"The Indian Ocean region south of Java, Pacitan, East Java was rocked by a tectonic earthquake," said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono on Monday, January 9, 2023. "The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential to cause a tsunami."
The main cause of the earthquake is said to be subduction activity from the Indo-Australia plate that drags underneath the Eurasian plate. The quake was measured at level II on the MMI scale.
The effects of the earthquake were reportedly widespread as the ground shook not only at Pacitan but also at its neighboring regions such as Blitar, Tulungagung, Trenggalek, Kediri, and Nganjuk. The quake was also reportedly felt at Yogyakarta and some regions in Central Java.
