TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has officially passed Law No. 3 of 2023 concerning defense cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore. This law officially regulates the defense deal agreed between the two countries on April 27, 2007, in Tampak Siring, Bali.
“Indonesia has established cooperation in defense which is one of the necessary factors to improve good relations between countries in order to boost the country's defense capabilities,” as said in the law signed by the President on January 3, 2023.
There are seven scopes of cooperation noted in the law. They are security dialogue, intelligence sharing, scientific cooperation, increasing defense human resources, exchanging military personnel, joint military exercises, and cooperation in search and rescue or SAR for disasters.
The 21-page law also details the defense cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore. Among them are that the two countries decided to build a joint training area and facilities in Indonesia and form a Defense Cooperation Committee to oversee this agreement which is valid for up to 25 years and can be reviewed once every six years after being enacted for 13 years.
