Mahfud Md Says Civil Coalition Not Understand Serious Human Rights Violations

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md responded to criticism voiced by the Civil Society Coalition over his statement that the Kanjuruhan stadium disaster was not a serious human rights violation. Mahfud said that the coalition did not understand what serious human rights violations mean.
“I am just quoting Komnas HAM's (National Commission on Human Rights) report. On the official report of Komnas HAM, the Kanjuruhan Tragedy does indicate a crime, but not a serious human rights violation. Don't civil society know about the Komnas HAM report?” he said.
According to him, civil society is often mistaken about the definition of serious human rights violations.
“The Civil Society Coalition is often mistaken, not understanding the difference between serious human rights violations and serious crimes. The Kanjuruhan Tragedy had been declared by Komnas HAM based on the results of an official investigation. The conclusion is, it is suspected to be ordinary human rights violations,” he said while chuckling.
The former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court also recalled his statement on December 10, 2019, during an anniversary event of the World Human Rights in Bandung, West Java, that there were no serious human rights violations during the era of Jokowi’s government.
Some of the Civil Society Coalition criticized the statement, highlighting cases of sadistic killings, persecution by a group of people against several people that led to mutilation, and suicide bombings that killed many people.
“They said it was clearly a serious human rights violation. Apparently, they didn't understand 'juridical' terms, that gross human rights violations are different from serious crimes,” said Mahfud Md.
