High-Speed Rail Project; 2 Chinese Workers Die After Construction Train Derails

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Director of Kereta Cepat Indonesia Cina (KCIC) Dwiana Slamet Riyadi, who oversees the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project, in a video statement on Monday opened up about the derailed construction train operated by Kereta Cepat Jakarta-Bandung (KCJB) that killed two Chinese workers and left four people injured.
The accident happened on December 18 afternoon at the high-speed rail’s West Bandung construction section.
“The construction train operated by Sinohydro as the contractor derailed,” said Riyadi.
All six of the victims were technicians from the Chinese state-owned firm Sinohydro. Those who were severely injured are currently still under intensive treatment at the Santosa Bandung Hospital.
“Those with minor injuries were released from the hospital. We convey our deepest condolences for the families of the victims who passed away,” he said.
KCIC asserted that the entire day on Monday was dedicated to evaluating the standard operating procedure of the railway’s construction and assuring that safety aspects in work were abided by.
On Monday, National Police spokesperson Dedi Prasetyo assured that the victims who had died were Chinese nationals who worked for the project as technicians. Police have conducted an investigation into the accident and identified all of the deceased and injured. According to initial information, the workers killed in the high-speed rail construction accident were Chang Shin Shang (40) and Chang Shin Yung (36).
