EU-ASEAN Summit; Jokowi Calls for Inclusivity, Sustainability

15 December 2022 17:10 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo stated in his speech at the European Union - ASEAN Commemorative Summit that the cooperation between the EU and ASEAN should remain inclusive and sustainable amidst the nickel-related tensions between Indonesia and the European Union.

In his speech, Jokowi expressed his views on the EU deforestation regulation proposal, which he feared will create obstacles. Jokowi also urged for more policies that help accommodate trade and investment that are expected to contribute to developing an inclusive economic recovery.

"Indonesia wishes to underline the fact that developments that have added value and inclusivity will help support the world's economic resilience. In this case, Indonesia will continue to build our downstream industry," said President Widodo.

As many as 27 leaders of EU member countries and nine out of 10 ASEAN heads of state were invited to Brussels to commemorate 45 years of diplomatic relations between the two organizations. Myanmar, which is currently being controlled by the military junta, was not invited to this event.

The second notable aspect of the President's speech was the energy transition. Jokowi believed that the ASEAN-EU partnership must result in a greener and more sustainable future. Jokowi also applauded the EU's support for the Bali Energy Transition Roadmap produced by the G20 Summit that was held back in November in Bali.

President Jokowi was one of six leaders who were asked to convey their views at the opening ceremony of the Brussels Summit.

"If we want to build a good partnership, then the partnership must be based on equality, there should be no coercion. There should no longer be anyone dictating and assuming that their standard is better than others," Jokowi said.

Jokowi's statement comes in the middle of the current awkward relations between Indonesia and the European Union’s nickel export ban WTO lawsuit.
