TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the early hours of Monday, December 12, robbers broke into the home of Blitar Mayor Santoso, stealing Rp400 million worth of cash and jewelry. They also held the mayor and his wife captive during the incident, handcuffing the mayor and putting duct tape over his mouth.

Blitar Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Argowiyono said that the robbery happened between 03:00 and 04:00. Witnesses said there were around four or five of them entering the mayor's home through the side door.

"The robbers managed to overpower three members of the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) who were guarding the Blitar Mayor's official residence. The robbers then entered the house and met Santoso and his wife," Argo said.

The robbers immediately held Santoso and his wife captive, threatening with weapons and asking them to show where the valuables are kept.

Argoyuwono stated that the robbery was briefly recorded by security cameras, which the robbers then destroyed.

The Mayor's Account

On Tuesday, December 13, the mayor gave his personal account of what happened. He said that he had just woken up when all of the sudden the robbers entered his bedroom and ambushed him and his wife.

"All of a sudden, three men entered my bedroom and immediately took my wife captive. I was told to lie on my stomach, and then they duct-taped my eyes and mouth and handcuffed me. My wife was told to stand facing north," Mayor Santoso said as reported by Antaranews.

The robbers, he said, threatened to hurt his wife if Santoso did not do what they said. Santoso, saying he doesn’t have a safe as he never keeps a lot of money at home, told the robbers to open the wardrobe which had some money and his wife's jewelry.

The mayor said he did not have a good look at the robbers' faces. He only remembered that one of them held a machete around 40 centimeters in length.

The police are still working on the case.
