Jakarta to Use Google's AI in Traffic Lights to Tackle Congestion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Transportation Agency will use artificial intelligence (AI) at traffic lights in order to regulate traffic volume and reduce vehicle density or congestion.
Head of the Traffic Control System Unit of the Jakarta Transportation Agency Emanuel Kristanto, stated that he will cooperate with Google for using the AI.
"Broadly speaking, Google will use their AI technology to analyze traffic volume at road intersections," said Emanuel, as quoted from Antara on Friday, December 9, 2022.
Emanuel explained that the artificial intelligence used will provide recommendations for the length of time the red light will last. This suggestion will adjust vehicle density to avoid congestion at crossroads, especially during rush hour.
"Data [from AI] will be sent to the Transportation Agency and we will apply it in the field," he added.
For now, the Jakarta Transportation Agency could not yet disclose technical details for the use of AI at traffic lights. According to Emanuel, these technical problems are the authority of Google.
Metro Jaya Traffic Police Director Sr. Comr. Latif Usman previously revealed that the level of congestion in the capital reached around 48 percent. This means the traffic is categorized at a very uncomfortable level.
