TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in his fourth visit to Cianjur, West Java, where a magnitude 5.6 earthquake devastated the region announced that government aid to help survivors recover will be through several installments.
The President has decided this system of disbursement be much more efficient in making sure that the funds are used to renovate damaged homes rather than spent on other needs.
"From the existing money, please ladies and gentlemen take it, but it will be given in installments," the President said at Cianjur, West Java, on December 8. “From our experience in other provinces, when government aid is given as a whole, it would not become a house, but in some cases was spent to buy a motorcycle.”
As previously reported, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 occurred in Cianjur on Monday, 21 November. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that the death toll as of Saturday, December 3, had increased to 334 people, which has not changed to date.
