TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0–updated from initial information of 6.2 magnitudes–jolted Jember, East Java, on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at 13:07 western Indonesian time (WIB). The quake was centered on the sea and was confirmed to have no potential to trigger a tsunami.
“The Indian Ocean areas, south of Java, Jember, East Java is rocked by a tectonic quake,” said the head of the quake and tsunami center at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, in a written statement, Tuesday.
The epicenter was precisely located 223 kilometers south of Jember with a depth of 10 kilometers. Daryono said it was classified as a shallow quake due to deformation or rock fractures in the outer-rise earthquake zone.
It was generated by the fracture of the Australian plate which was subducted under East Java. “The bending of this plate triggers a downward fault or normal fault,” Daryono added.
The shaking could be felt in Jember, Gubukmas, Mataram, Kepanjen, and Sumberpucung with an intensity scale of III MMI. The weaker tremor was reported in Kuta and South Kuta of Bali, as well as in Madiun, Ponorogo, Bantul, Yogyakarta, Sawahan, Klaten, Banyuwangi, and Karangasem.
As of 13:30 WIB, BMKG recorded two aftershocks with the largest magnitude at 4.6. Daryono thus asked residents to remain calm, not be influenced by baseless issues, and avoid cracked or damaged buildings.
