TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government planned to grant subsidies for people purchasing electric vehicles starting next year in a bid to boost public interest in taking part in the energy transition project. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati confirmed that the government will discuss the plan.
She asserted that no policy regarding the subsidy is finalized yet. “It will be discussed,” said Sri when met at the Dhanapala building of the Finance Ministry, Jakarta, Thursday, December 1, 2022.
Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan revealed the subsidy for the purchase of electric motorbikes might reach Rp6.5 million per unit.
“We are finalizing [the policy on subsidy for electric] motorbikes. Perhaps it is Rp6 million. In Thailand, [the subsidy amounts to] Rp7 million. So it’s probably about Rp6.5 million here,” said Luhut on Thursday.
Luhut expressed optimism that the subsidy could attract people's interest in switching to battery-powered cars and motorcycles. In addition, the consumption of fossil fuels could be reduced.
“We have calculated that it will be more profitable to use electric motorbikes than fossil fuel motorbikes and cars,” he said.
