TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will launch a verification program on December 2, 2022, and manually authenticate all verified accounts before the verification logo is enabled.
Twitter briefly relaunched the verification program last May after a hiatus of more than three years but it came to a halt after Elon Musk took over Twitter.
Manually authenticating a verified account could be considered a good step. After Musk took over Twitter, the company offered blue checks to eligible Twitter Blue customers without verifying their identity, resulting in the verified account being used for impersonating popular personalities and brands.
Aside from announcing the launch of the tentative verification time, Musk stated that the Twitter check mark will come in three colours, gold for companies, grey for the government, and blue for individuals.
He explained that individuals will now be able to have a secondary logo to indicate that they belong to an organization if verified by the organization itself.
Yet, it is still unclear whether Twitter will follow the same criteria as before for verifying accounts or if it will be updated. Musk has promised to provide a lengthy explanation regarding verification next week.
At this time the verification process is expected to be more clear and more rational than before. With Musk promoting 'free speech' and opposing fake accounts and spam bots on Twitter, the platform is expected to produce a solution for impersonation accounts and introduce a more transparent and working verification process for all.
