Cracks Develop in Mount Gede after Cianjur Earthquake

28 November 2022 12:42 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Bogor - The Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park Center (TNGGP) reported that cracks developed at the top of Mount Gede which was allegedly caused by the Cianjur earthquake on Monday, November 21, 2022. The quake also generated landslides on two hiking trails.

“There were cracks and landslides on two hiking trails of Mount Gede via Gunung Putri and Via Cibodas,” said the TNGGP spokesperson Agus Deni on Friday, November 25, 2022.

On the hiking trail via Cibodas, two landslides of 10 meters wide and 10 meters long occurred in Cisalada, while on the hiking trail via Gunung Putri, cracks were found 7 meters long in the Romusa block and the landslides of 8 meters wide and 3 meters high happened in the Tanah Merah block.

Agus explained that the inspection of the hiking trails and the peak area of the volcano was carried out by a joint team of Forestry Police Partners, Montana Volunteers, and Gede Pangrango Operation. After the discovery of these cracks and landslides, climbing activities and tours to Cibeureum Waterfall were temporarily closed.

“Hiking trails are temporarily closed until conditions improve and there are no more aftershocks,” Agus emphasized.

Previously on November 22, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation or PVMBG of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry denied circulating issues that Mount Gede erupted and emitted flames following the Cianjur earthquake. The agency head Hendra Gunawan confirmed the status of the volcano at still a normal level.
