TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has supplied 100,000 liters of water for the victims of the earthquake that struck Cianjur, West Java, earlier this week.

The assistance has been delivered to evacuation posts in four sub-districts.

The demand for clean water supply from four affected sub-districts, Cianjur, Cugenang, Pacet, and Warungkondang, has increased with distribution points set up at more than 50 posts, disaster emergency response field coordinator (TDB) for Cianjur district, Fajar Aciana, informed in Cianjur on Saturday.

"We distribute it according to demand at night or in the morning to fulfill their needs for water supply. We receive enough water supply to meet the needs of the evacuation post from the Cianjur tap water company (PDAM)," he said.

In the past five days, 11 tank trucks from the central PMI have been dispatched to supply water to residents since repairs on Cianjur PDAM's main pipe, which was damaged by the earthquake, have not been carried out due to the high volume of vehicles distributing aid every day.

Aciana reminded donors to place their donations at the disaster posts owned by the government or humanitarian organizations in Cianjur in order to prevent traffic jams, which could disrupt the distribution of logistics and clean water for the refugees.

"The density of vehicles wishing to deliver donations to the affected posts and locations has created traffic jams in Cianjur every day. This has definitely disrupted the distribution of logistics, especially water tanks," he disclosed.

Aciana also asked donors to not send aid in convoys of vehicles to prevent queues at distribution lines and disrupting the movement of ambulances due to the high volume of vehicles.

"We do not forbid you to donate to ease the burden on earthquake victims, but do not go in convoys like disaster tours because volunteers need to distribute logistics, especially clean water, which is really needed by affected residents, and prioritize those who are sick to arrive at the hospital immediately," he added.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Cianjur district, West Java, at 1:21 p.m. local time on November 21, 2022. It was centered 10 kilometers southwest of the district at a depth of 10 km. It did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

As of Saturday, the death toll from the quake climbed to 318, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) informed.

Meanwhile, the number of people who were severely injured in the earthquake was recorded at 595 and the number of people who sustained light injuries was pegged at 7,134.
