TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned people in Cianjur Regency, West Java, of collateral hazards following the 5.6-magnitude earthquake on Monday, November 22, 2022. The potential danger includes landslides and flash floods.
The agency head Dwikorita Karnawati said the warning was specifically for the people of Cianjur living on hillsides and valleys or riverbanks. According to her, it is very likely that the slopes of the hills in the region became fragile after the strong shaking.
This can be exacerbated by the high intensity of rain that potentially showers Cianjur. “These fragile slopes coupled with heavy rains can trigger landslides and flash floods, carrying material from the slopes,” Dwikorita said in a written statement, Tuesday, November 22, 2022.
She explained that many people died due to falling buildings after the quake. West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil confirmed that 162 people died and 326 were injured as a result of the Cianjur earthquake and its aftershocks.
The public was also asked to avoid cracked or damaged buildings as they have the potential to collapse when aftershocks occur. As of Tuesday morning, 10:00 Jakarta time, the agency recorded 127 aftershocks with the strongest intensity of 4.2 magnitudes.
The BMKG team visited the disaster site with the Cianjur Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to assist affected residents. In addition, starting Tuesday, November 22, the survey team documented aftershocks and the level of damage to produce macro-zonation and micro-zonation maps needed to support the reconstruction process and improve spatial planning.
