TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 5.6-magnitude Cianjur earthquake was felt until Bogor and Jakarta and caused landslides on the Cugenang highway towards Puncak and Cianjur. Consequently, the main route from Cianjur to Bogor was blocked. The Traffic Police directed vehicles in the area to turn back and take a different route.
“It's true that there is a landslide in the Cianjur area, [particularly] in Cugenang, the Puncak route to Bogor from Cianjur. However, we conduct anticipative measures by asking vehicles heading to Cianjur to turn back,” Bogor Traffic Police First Inspector Ketut Laswarjana told Tempo on Monday, November 21, 2022.
Ketut explained that the officers were posted in Simpang Gadog and Puncak Pas, the border point of Cianjur-Bogor. At least 20 personnel were mobilized to anticipate traffic density as the route was closed.
"We will do that until the evacuation is complete so that there is no heavy traffic,” Ketut explained.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the earthquake occurred at 13:30 local time and was centered in the Cianjur area, West Java. No potential for a tsunami was detected. Reports said that many buildings in the area collapsed, including in Cipanas, Cugenang, Cilaku, Warung Kondang, and the downtown area.
