BMKG Warns of Aftershocks following Strong Cianjur Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the epicenter of the powerful earthquake in Cianjur that also hits Jakarta and its surroundings on Monday, November 21, 2022, was on land.
"Be careful of potential aftershocks," BMKG posted on its social media account.
The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 5.6on the Richter Scale 10 kilometers southwest of Cianjur Regency, West Java, and at a depth of 10 kilometers. It was classified as a shallow quake.
The agency is still analyzing the cause. But it was clear that the strongest quake was felt in Cianjur at a scale of V MMI. The V MMI scale means it is felt by nearly everyone, many are awakened, some dishes and windows are broken, unstable objects are overturned, and pendulum clocks may stop.
The shaking was also felt in Garut and Sukabumi at a scale of IV-V MMI. In Bogor, Bandung City, and Rangkasbitung, it was reported at a scale of III MMI.
People in Jakarta, Depok, and South Tangerang were also affected by the earthquake as it had a scale of II-III MMI. Although the shaking was categorized as weak, many people panicked and run outdoors.
