M5.6 Bengkulu Earthquake Followed by M4.8 Aftershock: BMKG

16 November 2022 16:11 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA tectonic earthquake measured at a magnitude of 5.5 jolted Enggano in Bengkulu at 13:01 local time, Wednesday, November 16, 2022. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that it was centered in the sea.

The epicenter was located at 4.74° south latitude and 100.72° east longitude, or 184 kilometers northwest of Enggano, and was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

“By taking into account the epicenter and the hypocenter, it was a shallow quake due to the Indo-Australian Plate subducting into the Eurasian Plate,” said the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, on Wednesday.

The shaking occurred in the Hulu Palik and Arma Jaya areas at an intensity of III Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI). Level III means it is felt indoors as if a truck is passing. A weaker intensity of II MII was reported in the Sikakap, South Pagai, and Selangit areas.

No report of damage caused by the quake thus far. BMKG also confirmed that it had no potential to cause a tsunami. However, an aftershock was logged measuring at 4.8 magnitudes at 13:25 local time.

Daryono thus asked residents to stay calm and not be influenced by baseless issues related to the Bengkulu earthquake. People are also suggested to avoid cracked or damaged buildings.
