PKS President Visits Victims of the Kanjuruhan Tragedy, Offers Scholarships

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Ahmad Syaikhu, visited Klojen in Malang, East Java to meet the survivors of the Kanjuruan tragedy on Sunday, November 13, 2022.
Along with the PKS central executive board, Syaikhu came to listen to the victims' stories about the tragedy.
Syaikhu said that one of the victims who told him about the incident in Kanjuruhan was a student named Risky Dendy Nugroho.
"Risky said that in the neighbourhood where he lived, there were seven people who went to the match, and only three returned," Syaikhu said in a statement received by Tempo on Monday, November 14, 2022.
The former Deputy Mayor of Bekasi also stated that PKS offered Risky scholarships.
"Please, if you are interested, you can contact me, Insyaallah, the tuition fee will be paid in full," Syaikhu said to Risky.
In addition to Risky, Syaikhu has also heard stories from other victims' families in the district. He asked the entire entourage present to pray for the victims who did not survive the Kanjuruhan tragedy. "Hopefully the victims who died are good people and receive a place with God," Syaikhu said.
The Kanjuruhan tragedy occurred after the Liga 1 soccer match between Arema Malang and Persebaya FC at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, East Java on October 1, 2022. After the match ended with Persebaya coming up as the winner, several supporters began to run toward the field.
The action prompts the security forces from the police to dispel them. The chaos ensued when the officers began to fire tear gas at the stadium seating. Thousands of fans stampede for the exit where many victims died.
A total of 135 people died in the incident. The government then formed an Independent Joint Fact-Finding Team known to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md. In addition, the National Commission on Human Rights also investigated human rights violations in the tragedy.
The police have named 6 suspects in the Kanjuruhan tragedy and all have been arrested.
