TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sony Interactive Entertainment celebrates the launch of God of War Ragnarok in Kota Tua, or Jakarta's Old Town, in West Jakarta, starting Tuesday, November 8, 2022. It is the first time Indonesia participated in the celebration of the launch of a video game.
God of War Ragnarok is a sequel to the first God of War in 2018, which was considered to be the best game of that year. Developed by Santa Monica Studio in Los Angeles, it is become one of the most anticipated games by fans and is expected to win the Video Game award this year.
In Kota Tua Jakarta, Sony collaborates with the Jakarta Experience Board (JXB), a Municipally owned corporation tasked with developing tourism and beautifying the city. In Fatahillah Square lies a 12 x 3 meters mural depicting the battle of Kratos and Atreus, the two main characters of God of War, against Thor, the god of thunder in Norse mythology.
"We drew for eight days, the three of us," said the painter Cep Toha at the location, Tuesday, November 8. The painters from the Imural art community have known only the early God of War series, on PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. He has not yet played the early 2018 God of War. Thus when he received an order to draw Kratos and his son, he only took a peek at the trailer of the game. "The rest I made up myself."
Toha also inserted local elements in his work namely the Jakarta History Museum. They also added ondel-ondel in a shape that resembles an ancient nordic sculpture like those in God of War, so that it connects with the theme of the picture.
There are also games that share the same background with God of War named 'Exploring 9 Corners of Kota Tua'. "Inspired by the nine realms of Norse mythology, which is the background for the God of War story," said the Managing Director of the Jakarta Experience Board, Novita Dewi.
The game begins by scanning the QR code next to the mural. Other locations are BNI Sudirman Station and Dukuh Atas Station. The QR will lead to the JXB website which contains nine puzzles that refer to locations in Kota Tua. The winner is those who take the most stunning pictures on all given nine locations and link them to several social media. "The prize is a God of War game set and Thor's hammer," said Novita.
The game is held until November 14, 2022. Jakarta Experience Board has not yet decided the fate of the mural after the marketing campaign for God of War Ragnarok ends.
