Expert Deems Law Formation in Jokowi's Era Dominated by Oligarchic Interests

4 November 2022 13:26 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaConstitutional law expert Bivitri Susanti assessed that the formation of law in the past three years of the Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s regime was dominated by the interests of oligarchs. This dominance, she said, occurs in almost all regulations that have been issued.

“It is clear that the process of making laws in the last three years has prioritized oligarchs,” said Bivitri in the forum of the National Association of University Student Executive Bodies (BEM SI) entitled Kemajuan Terbalik Indonesia or Indonesia's reverse progress on Thursday, November 3, 2022.

Meanwhile, a researcher from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) Nailul Huda highlighted the worsening Indonesian economy in the past three years. Apart from COVID-19, he said, the poor economic condition was also attributable to government policies that were not in favor of the people.

“For example, the policy of fuel price hikes that will surely lead to inflation and the collapse of several companies so that layoffs will inevitably occur and the number of unemployed people will continue to increase,” said Nailul.

A socio-political analyst from the Jakarta State University, Ubedilah Badrun, believed that rampant corruption cases, declining quality of democracy, and the production of regulations controlled by the oligarchs can trigger public protest movements.

He predicted that if these protests are seen as threatening the government’s power, then acts of authoritarianism will be unavoidable.

“The trend of deteriorating democratic practices during the COVID-19 pandemic still lingers, at that time, the government arrogantly ignored public inputs, for example ignoring people's rejection of the job creation law,” said Ubedilah.
