TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin reported that the number of children suffering acute kidney injury increased to 245 as of Monday, October 24, 2022, from 241 last Friday. Out of the total number, 80 percent were detected in Jakarta, West Java, Aceh, East Java, West Sumatra, Bali, Banten, and North Sumatra.
Budi explained that the number of provinces reporting such cases increased to 26 from the previous 22. The number of deaths also rose from 133 to 141 kids.
"The fatality rate is quite high, with 144 deaths or 57.6 percent. This case number actually started rising in August. Before August, the death number was normal over the past years at below 5," said Budi at Bogot Presidential Palace, West Java, on Monday, October 24, 2022.
The case of acute kidney injury among children was suspected to be caused by the consumption of medicinal syrups products containing Ethylene Glycol (EG), Diethylene Glycol (DEG), and Ethylene Glycol Butyl Ether (EGBE) that are above the safe limit.
The Indonesian government has banned the sale of cough syrups in order to prevent more cases of acute kidney injury among children.
