NasDem Claims Democrat Party, PKS Agree to Support Anies Baswedan in Presidential Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The NasDem Party reportedly would create a coalition with the Democrat Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). Deputy chair of the NasDem Party, Ahmad Ali, stated that the three agreed to endorse Anies Baswedan in the 2024 general elections. 

Currently, NasDem is the only party that has declared the former governor of Jakarta as its presidential candidate.

"The declaration of support for Anies had been held [a coalition is formed]. Three parties agreed to support Anies," said Ali when contacted on Monday, October 24, 2022.

Ali explained that the coalition to be established must be based on equality and so no party should feel superior to others.

Although the three parties agreed to support Anies, Ali said no agreement has been reached regarding the criteria and the figure of Anies' companion. He argued that they must first have the same view on the matter to prevent the coalition from falling apart halfway.

"We don't want the declaration to end because no agreement on [Anies' vice presidential candidate] has not been made yet. It’s better for us to debate, find common ground," Ali added, hoping that when the coalition is declared, there will be no more disputes over the candidates.

Chaired by Surya Paloh, the NasDem Party had previously stated that it had pocketed a number of criteria for the vice presidential candidate who would accompany Anies Baswedan in the 2024 presidential election.
